PTSD and Trauma

Experiencing trauma can have a profound and lasting impact on a young person's emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing. Trauma may arise from a single distressing event, such as an accident, assault, or natural disaster, or from ongoing stressors like abuse, neglect, bullying, or exposure to family violence. When trauma overwhelms a young person’s ability to cope, it can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other trauma-related difficulties.

Children and adolescents experiencing trauma may show a range of symptoms, including:

  • Intrusive memories or nightmares related to the event
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Heightened anxiety, irritability, or emotional outbursts
  • Difficulties with sleep or concentration
  • Feelings of detachment, numbness, or hopelessness
  • Physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomach aches

At Future Minds Psychology, we use evidence-based trauma therapies to support young people in processing and recovering from traumatic experiences. Therapy may involve:

  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) to help process distressing memories and build coping strategies.
  • Mindfulness and self-regulation techniques to help manage distressing emotions and body-based responses to trauma.
  • Play therapy or expressive therapies for younger children to process trauma in a developmentally appropriate way.
  • Psychoeducation for families to support a young person’s healing journey in a safe and understanding environment.

Recovery from trauma is possible with the right support. We work with young people and their families to help them regain a sense of safety, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. If your child or adolescent has experienced trauma, seeking early intervention can make a significant difference in their healing process.
