Grief and Loss

Experiencing grief and loss can be deeply challenging for young people, affecting their emotions, behaviour, and sense of security. The loss of a loved one, pet, or significant life changes—such as parental separation or moving away—can bring feelings of sadness, anger, confusion, or anxiety. These emotions may manifest in different ways. Grief in young people can look different than in adults. Some young people may show sadness, anger, or mood swings, while others may withdraw, become more anxious, or exhibit changes in their behaviour, such as trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, or acting out.

Young people may also experience difficulty concentrating, physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches, or regress to earlier behaviours, such as needing extra comfort or becoming more clingy. Some may struggle to express their emotions verbally, leading to frustration or avoidance of the topic altogether.

Psychological support can provide a safe space to process grief, develop coping strategies, and find ways to honour and remember what has been lost. With compassionate guidance, young people can navigate their grief in a way that fosters healing, resilience, and emotional well-being.
